Bird Flue and Local Poultry Keepers

On the 5th September 2022, Gwynedd Council Trading Standards (Animal Health) received notification from the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) of the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 on a captive bird premises in Arthog, Gwynedd. A 3km Protection Zone and a 10km Surveillance Zone were declared around the infected premises.

Due to the quick intervention by APHA and Gwynedd Council Trading Standards (Animal Health) in the implementation of disease control activities within the 3km Protection Zone, the 3km Protection Zone has now been lifted (as of 30th September 2022).  The 10km Surveillance Zone remains in place. Further details of the measures within the Surveillance Zone can be found on:
https://gov.wales/declaration-avian-influenza-protection-zone-surveillance-zone-near-arthog-gwynedd-wales

Avian influenza is likely to be an ongoing problem within the immediate future, and as such, we would request and encourage any keepers of domestic poultry or caged birds to register their birds with the APHA on:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/poultry-including-game-birds-registration-rules-and-forms

By registering your birds, you will help prevent the spread of disease and protect the national poultry flock and allow the APHA to contact you if there’s a disease outbreak (such as bird flu) in your area.

However, should you experience any sudden poultry deaths and have any concerns relating to the health of your birds then please contact APHA on 0300 3038268.
